Karnay - Surnay National Music

The karnay is a significant national wind musical instrument that, much like the surnai (Persian: سرنای‎), has retained its traditional form without modernization for use in contemporary ensembles or orchestras. This instrument is particularly valued for its powerful sound and piercing timbre, making it suitable for signaling and ceremonial purposes.

There are two distinct types of karnay: the muiuz karnay, crafted from mountain goat horn, and the jez karnay, which is made from copper or brass. While these instruments differ considerably in material and construction, they both share the characteristic of lacking playing apertures, which contributes to their unique sound profiles.
